A Waterpipe is a single or multi-stemmed (often glass-based) instrument for smoking tobacco products and plant extracts in which the smoke is cooled by water. The smoke is drawn through ice cold water to cool, filter, and makes the fume more soothing; thus, reducing the irritating and harmful effects of smoking on the lungs. Scientific Studies have shown that using a Waterpipe exposes the user to lower levels of harmful substances than smoking tobacco. Substantial reductions were also found for the Tsunami Waterpipe.
Older generations used the Waterpipe to smoke hashish and opium which created a negative stigma for the Waterpipe. Slowly, society is accepting the Waterpipe as more of a pipe for tobacco instead of illegal drugs. The Waterpipe has been growing in popularity in the United States and Europe since the experimentation of the 60's. Now they are in every college head shop and Smoke shop markets across the entire U.S. It is also growing in popularity in Japan.
In comparison to other smoking delivery methods such as ingestion, using a Waterpipe has a more rapid onset of the pharmacological effect by direct delivery into the bloodstream (via the lungs) and more precise titration, such that, the desired level is reached and not exceeded, enabling a consistent and appropriate dosage.
According to Ismet Ertep, "Cigarettes are for nervous people, competitive people, and people on the run. When smoking through a Waterpipe, you have time to think. It teaches you patience and tolerance, and gives you an appreciation of good company. Waterpipe smokers have a much more balanced approach to life than cigarette smokers" (http://www.nytimes.com/1997/06/10/world/inhale-the-pleasure-of-an-unhurried-ottoman-past.html).
